The Signs In The Sky

First Flight

Vivian wakes up to the smell of coffee and a warm morning sun shining through a bedroom she swears wasn’t this big when she slept. She looks around. There’s a floor-to-ceiling window on the left that looks over the shores, a closet that looks bigger than the rooms she slept in, a desktop on the table by the right, and the most giant tv she has ever seen on the wall. It’s probably a 100’. She’s too busy looking at the room to notice the coffee beside her.

“Excuse me, ma’am?” He calls out.
“Oh, hi. Is that for me?” Vivian replies.
“You won’t be having coffee today as usual? Sorry, ma’am. I should have known.” He says.
“No, no, that’s okay.” Vivian replies and takes the cup from him.
“I’m good.” Vivian says as she takes a sip from the coffee. Her expression changes and her eyes wider. She looks at the coffee and looks at him.

“Is everything okay? You don’t like it?” he asks.
Vivian ignores him and gulps down the contents of the cup. She licks her lip and looks at him. Releasing he has been looking at her this whole time, she keeps her composure and smiles at him.

“It was just there.”
“I’ll do better next time, ma’am.”
“You better.” Vivain says.

The faceless tall, dark servant with a bandage on his hand leaves her and she gets up from her king-sized bed. She stretches as she gets out of bed and turns to the window. She looks at her yacht decked on her marina. She smiles.

Life has been good for this MIT graduate. After she created the first fully automated self-learning software, her company, Envy Tech, has reached high beyond. Vivain Okoro is one of the wealthiest women in the world. If not the wealthiest.

She walks downstairs fully clothed in a refined black trouser suit and her PC in hand. Proudly Envy Tech. She smiles at her faceless servants of all shapes and sizes as they work to ensure the house looks its best.

“Calm down. My session isn’t happening here.” She says with a smile on her face.
“We just want to make it look good for you, ma.” One of them replies.
“In that case, don’t stop on my account.” Vivain says. She makes her way to the end of the stairs. One of her servants waits for her with a full breakfast. Bread, eggs, bacon, baked beans, and all.

“Send that to the office and tell them to keep it warm.” She says.
“Yes, ma’am.” the servant replies.
“It’s a big day today and I can’t afford any mistakes.” Vivain says feeling optimistic. She’s so optimistic that she wants to be nice to everyone. In fact,

“You know what? Take the month off. All of you, I’ll still pay. You deserve it, all of you.”
“Thank you, ma’am.” They all say.

Vivain wonders why they never question her command. Yes, she just gave them the full month off and it’s in their favor but she has asked them to do many other things that weren’t pleasant. Take the coffee guy for instance. She once asked him to dip his hand into boiling hot coffee and when it burnt him, she asked if he didn’t think it would burn her tongue as well. He simply said he was sorry and she told him to do better. She often feels as though if she asked them to jump off a cliff, they would. Maybe they are robots. She normally won’t care about this but today is different. She feels as though she’s living someone else’s life but the face is the same and so is the goal.

Vivian wakes up. She had one of those dreams again. Where they’re from… past… present… she can’t tell. She has a big day ahead of her. The First Flight awaits.
